In a strategic political move ahead of the 2027 general elections, a delegation of Progressive Governors has reportedly paid a visit to former President Muhammadu Buhari, pleading with him to intervene and dissuade key members of the defunct Congress for Progressive Change (CPC) from exiting the All Progressives Congress (APC).
The visit, which sources say took place at Buhari’s hometown in Daura, Katsina State, was triggered by growing concerns that the original CPC bloc, instrumental to the APC's formation and its 2015 victory, is being sidelined and systematically relegated within the ruling party.
Among the aggrieved CPC stalwarts is former Kaduna State Governor, Malam Nasir El-Rufai, who has already dumped the APC and pitched his political tent with the Social Democratic Party (SDP), fueling speculations of deeper fractures within the party.
The governors, it was gathered, are worried that more influential CPC figures may follow El-Rufai’s path if urgent reconciliation efforts are not made.
They appealed to Buhari, seen as the spiritual leader of the CPC legacy group, to use his influence to prevent further defections that could weaken the APC’s chances in the next election.
Political analysts believe that the outcome of Buhari’s engagement with the aggrieved faction could shape the internal dynamics of the APC as the battle for 2027 begins to gather momentum.
