The Nasarawa State Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources has reaffirmed its commitment to bolstering public health initiatives aimed at mitigating environmental diseases that threaten public safety.
Commissioner for Environment and Natural Resources, Barrister Isaac Danladi, made this declaration during a strategic meeting with a delegation from the Nigeria Center for Disease Control and Prevention (NCDC), led by Dr. Peter Attah, Director of Public Health.
Barrister Danladi stressed the urgency of raising public awareness on key environmental health determinants, including air quality, climate stability, water and sanitation, chemical safety, radiation protection, and the promotion of sustainable urban development. He underscored the ministry's readiness to collaborate on health advocacy efforts that foster a safer and healthier society.
In her remarks, Pharmacist Chibuzo Eneh, Director of the Subnational Department at NCDC, stated that their visit aimed to conduct a comprehensive health security assessment. The assessment identified critical gaps in environmental health, highlighting the need for proactive advocacy and policy interventions at the state level.
She further emphasized Nigeria’s commitment to the International Health Regulations (2005) and called on state governments to strengthen their health security frameworks, particularly in light of recurrent disease outbreaks. Collaboration between federal and state agencies, she noted, is crucial in safeguarding public health and enhancing national resilience against environmental health threats.
