The Rivers State Government has dismissed allegations that Governor Siminalayi Fubara failed to prevent threats against oil installations in the state.
In a statement issued by the Chief Press Secretary to the Governor, Nelson Chukwudi, the government described the claims as misleading, emphasizing that Governor Fubara has consistently advocated for peace and the protection of oil infrastructure.
According to the statement, the agitation by Niger Delta stakeholders, including the Ijaw National Congress (INC) and youth groups, was in response to remarks made by the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, who allegedly downplayed the influence of the Ijaw people. Governor Fubara, it stated, has repeatedly reaffirmed his commitment to security, highlighting his role in the Presidential Committee on the Protection of Oil Installations.
Addressing the controversy surrounding the demolition of the Rivers State House of Assembly chambers, the government clarified that the decision was based on expert recommendations.
The statement recalled that former Governor Wike had previously criticized the state of the complex, urging lawmakers to take responsibility for its deterioration.
Following structural assessments after the October 29, 2023, incident, the government opted for a complete reconstruction, with the new facility now nearing completion.
The statement further alleged that supporters of the FCT Minister were behind violent attacks on local government secretariats during the October 5, 2024, elections, stressing that Governor Fubara’s administration has consistently maintained peace despite provocations.
The Rivers State Government urged security agencies to focus on those instigating violence and reaffirmed its commitment to stability, economic growth, and governance.
