Former Inspector General of Police, Sir Mike Okiro, has called for immediate dialogue and intervention to address the escalating political crisis in Rivers State. Speaking at a press briefing, Okiro emphasized the urgent need for stakeholders to come together and restore peace in the state.
Describing Rivers State as a crucial part of Nigeria, he warned that instability in the state could have far-reaching consequences for the entire country. "If the eye is in pain, the whole body suffers. Rivers State is like the eye of Nigeria, and its stability is essential for national peace," he stated.
Okiro announced plans to convene a broad-based peace initiative that would include neutral leaders from various sectors, not just politicians, to engage with the warring factions. He stressed that no conflict is without a solution and urged both sides to embrace dialogue in the spirit of unity and reconciliation.
The former police chief also underscored the importance of respecting the rule of law, noting that the Supreme Court's rulings must be upheld. He called on the Rivers State House of Assembly to remain focused on its legislative duties, urging lawmakers to prioritize governance over political disputes.
As tensions continue to rise, Okiro's intervention aims to prevent further deterioration of the situation and foster a path toward lasting peace in Rivers State.
