The Executive Chairman of Toto Local Government Council, Pharm. Ahmed Baba Yahaya, has called for peace and tolerance among the people of the area as the displaced Bassa community is set to return home on Monday, February 10, 2025.
Pharm. Yahaya made the appeal during an expanded stakeholders’ security meeting held to prepare for the safe return of the Bassa people to Toto LGA after years of displacement caused by crises. The meeting was part of Governor Abdullahi Sule’s peace initiative aimed at reintegrating displaced communities back into their ancestral homes.
The council chairman emphasized the importance of peace for development, urging all stakeholders to embrace forgiveness and unity for the progress of the local government.
"For us to achieve speedy development in Toto, we must set aside our differences, forgive one another, and embrace peace and tolerance," Yahaya said.
He disclosed that the returnees would be temporarily camped in Ugya before moving to their respective villages.
According to him, adequate security arrangements have been made to ensure their safety during the resettlement process.
Addressing the increasing influx of Fulani herders and other migrants into the area, the chairman instructed paramount rulers, village heads, and Fulani leaders to be vigilant and properly document all newcomers before allowing them to settle.
He warned that the council would take decisive action against anyone who disrupts the peace.
The council boss commended security agencies for their efforts in safeguarding lives and property in the area.
In their remarks, Alhaji Usman Hussaini, Permanent Secretary of Humanitarian Affairs, and Alhaji Maikeffi Ada, Permanent Secretary of Security, reaffirmed the state government’s commitment to the safety and well-being of the returning Bassa people.
Traditional rulers, led by HRH Mr. Abu Shekwo, Dadayako of Yelwa Chiefdom, expressed appreciation to Governor Sule, the council chairman, and security agencies for their role in restoring peace in Toto.
He assured that the traditional council would continue sensitizing their communities on peaceful coexistence.
The expanded security meeting was attended by representatives from non-governmental organizations (NGOs), tribal and youth organizations, women leaders, religious leaders, Ardos, Fulani leaders, security agencies, and vigilante groups.
The meeting concluded with a visit to the proposed temporary camp site for further assessment and preparations by state and local government officials, accompanied by security personnels.
