Nigerians are religious people. However, sentiment and negative emotions sometimes overwhelm and cloud our reasoning, causing us to forget the religious injunction to play the game according to the rules. Those of us who participated in selecting the new VC for our alma mater can attest to its credibility due to its transparency, which is free of bias. Still, some individuals use sentiment to foster negativity and challenge the university council's prerogative to choose any of the three candidates presented by the selection board. The University Miscellaneous Act of 1993 is clear, and one need not be a lawyer to interpret it. Ultimately, only one person can hold the position of university VC, regardless of how many contenders there are. Let's all come together to support the university in making progress.
My article last week drew several comments and phone calls from numerous individuals, including prominent stakeholders and other interest groups. All praised the process and wished for a bright future for the university and Nigeria. I am sharing some of the comments with my readers to clarify the issue. Happy reading.
