In a landmark move on February 5, 2025, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu signed the North Central Development Commission (NCDC) into law—a decision hailed as a milestone for the geopolitical region. Former commissioner of Information, Culture and Tourism, Hon. Dogo Shammah, offered keen insight into the development during a press briefing, describing the commission as a “game changer” that promises to usher in long-overdue federal projects and sustainable development.
Hon. Shammah emphasized that the North Central zone has historically been left behind in federal project execution compared to other regions. “The NCDC will strengthen our economy, enhance infrastructural development, and accelerate social engagement for the well-being of our people,” he stated. The former commissioner noted that the commission’s establishment is not only timely but also a critical step towards leveling the developmental playing field.
The announcement comes on the heels of Nigeria Senate President Senator Godswill Akpabio’s recent declaration during plenary, where he underscored the commission’s forthcoming benefits and its role in delivering sustainable life achievements to the citizenry.
Praise was also extended to Hon. Jerry Umaru, the National Assembly member representing Akwanga-Nasarawa Eggon and Wamba Federal Constituency, who sponsored the bill. According to Shammah, Umaru’s unwavering commitment and consistent advocacy at the National Assembly have once again demonstrated his dedication to his constituents, making them proud of his service.
Additionally, the choice of Lafia—the capital of Nasarawa State—as the commission’s headquarters was lauded for its strategic value. “The peaceful and friendly nature of the Nasarawa people made Lafia a well-thought-out selection,” Shammah added, while also commending Nasarawa State Governor Eng. A.A. Sule for his continued support.
As the North Central Development Commission prepares to begin operations, regional stakeholders and citizens alike are optimistic that this initiative will mark the start of a transformative era, bridging historical gaps and propelling the region toward a prosperous future.
