The National Examinations Council (NECO) has blacklisted 14 examination centres in Ogun and Oyo states, Southwest Nigeria, over various malpractices recorded during the 2024 Senior School Certificate Examination (SSCE) for external candidates.
Announcing the development in Minna on Friday while releasing the 2024 external examination results, NECO’s Registrar, Professor Dantani Ibrahim Wushishi, said the action was taken to uphold the integrity of the examination process.
He revealed that seven supervisors were also blacklisted for their roles in aiding and abetting examination malpractices at the affected centres.
“Seven supervisors—two each from Oyo and Ogun states, and one each from Lagos, Cross River, and Ebonyi states—were recommended for blacklisting due to poor supervision, lateness, and involvement in aiding malpractice during the examination,” he stated.
The registrar further disclosed that the 14 blacklisted centres, comprising 10 in Ogun and four in Oyo, were found guilty of widespread malpractice across nine subjects.
On the issue of examination malpractice, Professor Wushishi noted that 6,160 candidates were booked for various offenses in the 2024 exams, compared to 8,518 in 2023, representing a significant 27.7% reduction.
Regarding the overall performance of candidates, he announced that 86,067 candidates registered for the examination, with 84,799 sitting for it.
“The number of candidates who secured five credits and above, including English Language and Mathematics, stands at 57,114, representing 67.35%,” he added.
Professor Wushishi reaffirmed NECO’s commitment to maintaining the credibility of its examinations and ensuring a fair and transparent assessment process for all candidates.
