Governor Abdullahi Sule of Nasarawa State has called on the state's youth to engage in technical education to qualify for employment in the burgeoning mining industry, particularly with the influx of Chinese mining companies.
He emphasized that acquiring relevant technical skills is essential for the local workforce to benefit from these emerging opportunities.
This appeal was made during Governor Sule's inspection of the Jiuling Lithium Mining Company's construction site in Endo, Nasarawa Local Government Area.
The visit followed his recent trip to China, where he met with Jiuling's chairman in Yichun. The company has committed to establishing a significant presence in Nasarawa State.Governor Sule highlighted that the state's citizens could maximize benefits from incoming mining companies by obtaining relevant qualifications. He noted that many technical positions are currently filled by individuals from other states, underscoring the need for Nasarawa's youth to pursue careers that align with industry demands.
The governor also expressed satisfaction with the company's environmental protection measures, noting that their excavation methods are designed to prevent pollution. He assured that his administration would support Jiuling in infrastructure development, including roads, water supply, and electricity, to facilitate smooth operations.
Jiuling's Managing Director, Xiong Jin, reiterated the company's commitment to building one of the largest lithium processing factories in Endo, with an estimated investment of $200 million. He confirmed that graduates employed at the mining site would receive a minimum salary of N500,000 and requested state support in security and infrastructure.
Governor Sule responded by highlighting ongoing collaborations with federal authorities to ensure adequate security for the company's operations.
He also commended the selection of Sinoma as the contractor for the mining site, citing their reputable track record in environmental protection and quality work.
The governor's call to action aims to prepare Nasarawa's youth to seize employment opportunities in the state's growing mining sector, fostering economic development and reducing unemployment.
