President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has reaffirmed the pivotal role of state governors in advancing Nigeria’s development, calling them the "most important link" to the nation’s prosperity.
The President made this statement during a New Year homage by Vice President Kashim Shettima and members of the Nigeria Governors Forum (NGF) at his Ikoyi residence in Lagos.
Highlighting their influence on food security, economic growth, and local development, Tinubu urged the governors to prioritize agricultural productivity, local government autonomy, and currency stability.
“You are the most important link to Nigeria's prosperity and development.
The Federal Government accounts for 30 to 35 percent of allocated revenue; the rest comes to you. The agricultural value chain depends on you. You own the land, and the job is in your hands,” he said.
Dispelling rumors of discord over local government autonomy, the President emphasized collaboration for grassroots development.
“We will not fight within us. You control your local governments. Let’s do it together and ensure Nigeria is better off for it,” he added.
Tinubu also urged governors to take pride in their achievements while pledging to visit Enugu State on January 4 to witness progress firsthand.
Kwara State Governor and NGF Chairman Abdulrahman Abdulrazak commended the administration’s achievements, citing its policies as transformative, particularly in agriculture and local governance. He assured Tinubu of the governors’ unwavering support in building a prosperous Nigeria.
