The Maikaya Development Foundation, a non-governmental organization, has donated a solar-powered borehole to the Angwan Sarki Muhammad Umar community in Toto Local Government Area (LGA) of Nasarawa State.
Speaking at the commissioning ceremony, the Foundation’s Chief Executive Officer, Alhaji Mohammed Maikaya, emphasized that the initiative aimed to alleviate the community’s long-standing water scarcity issues.
"The 6,000-litre capacity solar-powered borehole aligns with the Foundation’s mission of adding value to lives," he said. "We are thrilled that the community can begin the year with such a positive development."
Maikaya noted that the intervention complements the efforts of Governor Abdullahi Sule's administration in delivering impactful projects across Nasarawa State.
The selection of Angwan Sarki Muhammad Umar was based on identified urgent water needs in the area.
The chairman of Toto LGA, Mr. Ahmed Baba-Yahaya, expressed profound gratitude for what he described as a transformative gift.
He highlighted the immense impact the borehole would have on reducing the physical and health burdens of sourcing water.
Alhaji Mohammed Tanko, Chairman of Kogi State Civil Service Commission, also lauded the Foundation’s decision to use solar power for the borehole, eliminating the recurring costs of fuel and maintenance often associated with motorized systems.
The community’s village head, Mallam Abdul Ibrahim, pledged to ensure the borehole is well-maintained and utilized responsibly.
In addition to the borehole project, the Foundation recently launched a scholarship program for indigent students and enrolled 750 residents in the state health insurance scheme.
The initiative underscores the Foundation’s commitment to improving the quality of life in underserved communities across Nasarawa State.
