The North Central Citizens Council (NCCC) has voiced its support for Bauchi State Governor Bala Mohammed regarding the ongoing debate over the controversial Tax Reform Bills.
In a statement signed by the organization’s Coordinator, Comrade Mohammed Eneji, the NCCC commended Governor Mohammed's call for the federal government to reconsider the reforms, which the governor described as potentially detrimental to the North. The group echoed the governor's concerns, warning that the bills could exacerbate poverty and underdevelopment in the region.
“The statement by Governor Bala is neither confrontational nor controversial but represents the sentiments of an average northerner,” the NCCC said. “The North, particularly the North Central zone, shares his position on these anti-people policies. The economy is already in shambles, and northerners have borne the brunt of the administration’s measures.”
The group criticized the government for prioritizing borrowing and introducing reforms that they claim disproportionately harm the North, describing the policies as unjust and detrimental to the region’s development.
“Governor Bala has every right to speak for his people. Instead of dismissing his comments as a threat, the presidency should listen to the voice of reason, which represents the collective concerns of northerners,” the statement read.
The NCCC warned that continued disregard for northern interests could lead to a withdrawal of support for President Bola Ahmed Tinubu in future elections. They also issued a series of demands, including:
Improved security for farmers to enhance agricultural productivity.
Full revitalization of the Ajaokuta Steel Company.
Development of solid mineral resources across the North.
Reopening land borders to stimulate regional trade.
Establishment and expansion of sea and dry ports.
“These measures must be addressed before introducing any tax reforms,” Comrade Eneji stated. “Only then can the government earn the region’s trust and demonstrate fairness in its policies.”
The NCCC emphasized that unless these demands are met, they will continue to oppose the Tax Reform Bills and mobilize against policies they deem unfair to northern Nigeria.
