Edo State Governor, Senator Monday Okpebholo, on Tuesday disclosed that the 18 suspended Local Government Council Chairmen allegedly remitted approximately N12 billion to leaders of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) over 15 months.
Governor Okpebholo made this known while receiving the acting Chairmen and Councilors of the 18 Local Government Areas during a courtesy visit to the Government House in Benin City.
Commending the acting Chairmen for their transparency and commitment to democracy, the governor stressed that local government funds are meant for grassroots development, not personal gain.
“When I assumed office, I reviewed financial records presented by the Accountant-General and uncovered unexplained expenditures,” Governor Okpebholo stated. “One such item was tagged ‘Environmental Security Funding,’ amounting to N800 million monthly. These funds were reportedly contributed by the Chairmen and handed over to party leaders.”
Efforts to obtain clarity from the suspended Chairmen proved futile. “They failed to provide their financial records within the stipulated time. As a result, I referred the matter to the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) and the Edo State House of Assembly, which led to their suspension,” he added.
Governor Okpebholo condemned the mismanagement of local government resources, particularly when schools lacked adequate teachers and other critical needs. He lauded the acting Chairmen for taking bold steps to uphold accountability, including the impeachment of corrupt officials.
“The funds belong to the grassroots, not individuals. I am ready to collaborate with you to ensure local government councils make progress,” he assured.
Chairman of the Local Government Commission, Hon. Damian Lawani, expressed the acting Chairmen's readiness to work in synergy with the governor’s administration to deliver the dividends of democracy to the grassroots.
Acting Chairmen, including Hon. Iradia Benjamin Osas (Uhunmwonde), Hon. Godsent Agboibo (Esan West), and Hon. Joy Ohonyon (Owan West), pledged their loyalty to Governor Okpebholo’s administration and promised to ensure development across Edo State.
