In a pivotal move ahead of the 2027 general elections, former Kaduna State Governor Nasir El-Rufai and retired Major Hamza Al-Mustapha, along with other prominent opposition leaders, convened at the national headquarters of the Social Democratic Party (SDP) in Abuja.

The closed-door meeting, confirmed by SDP Chairman Shehu Gabam and former Atiku Abubakar spokesperson Segun Showunmi, is believed to focus on strategies to form a unified opposition coalition to challenge the ruling party in the upcoming elections.

El-Rufai, who has transitioned from a key ally to a vocal critic of President Bola Tinubu's administration, has been at the forefront of opposition efforts following his exclusion from the ministerial list due to security concerns raised by the Department of State Services (DSS).

Also present at the meeting was Hamza Al-Mustapha, the 2023 presidential candidate of the Action Alliance (AA) and former Chief Security Officer to General Sani Abacha.
This gathering aligns with calls from former APC North-West Vice Chairman Salihu Lukman for disillusioned APC members and opposition leaders to rally together and present a credible political alternative.

As Nigeria approaches the critical 2027 elections, the opposition's efforts to consolidate may signal a shift in the country’s political dynamics.
However, the details of the discussions remain undisclosed.
