The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has expressed deep sorrow over the tragic loss of Assistant Superintendent of the EFCC, Aminu Sahabi Harisu, who was killed on January 17, 2025, by a suspected internet fraudster, Joshua Chukwubueze Ikechukwu, during an official operation in Awka, Anambra State.
The EFCC condemned the false and callous narratives circulating on social media regarding the incident, describing them as irresponsible and disrespectful to the memory of the slain officer.
It emphasized that Harisu was performing legitimate duties and decried attempts to rationalize or support the actions of the suspected criminal.
Preliminary investigations revealed that Harisu, along with other EFCC officers, was part of an operation targeting suspected internet fraudsters.
The team had lawfully secured 37 suspects from a residential building when Ikechukwu, after spotting the officers on CCTV, refused to cooperate and instead opened fire, fatally wounding Harisu and injuring another officer.
Ikechukwu, reportedly involved in coding and questionable online medical supplies, is now in police custody. Recovered evidence, including laptops, iPads, and recording devices, confirms his involvement in internet fraud.
The EFCC has vowed to ensure he faces justice for his actions.
The Commission also raised concerns about the increasing threat posed by internet fraudsters, noting that many are now armed and engaging in violent crimes such as kidnapping and ritual killings.
It called on the public to remain vigilant and reject the glamorization of these criminals as mere "Yahoo boys and girls."
While mourning Harisu, the EFCC reaffirmed its commitment to combating corruption and internet fraud, warning that any further attacks on its officers would be met with the full weight of the law.
The Commission expressed gratitude to sister agencies and well-meaning individuals for their support during this difficult time.
