This partnership has yielded significant benefits for both sides. The government has consistently supported labour programs and projects and ensured labour representation in key government boards and initiatives.
A testament to this relationship is the appointment of a former state NLC leader as the State Auditor General.
In return, labour has played an advisory role, providing key insights that have contributed to maintaining industrial harmony in the state.
Unlike the frequent industrial disputes witnessed in other states, Nasarawa has enjoyed relative stability, with strikes limited to national actions beyond the state's control.
A major highlight of this collaboration was Nasarawa being one of the few states to implement the new minimum wage promptly. Labour, in turn, prioritized the completion of staff promotions before delving into minimum wage discussions—a request that Governor Sule approved, reflecting his labour-friendly disposition.
This approach allowed for a focus on ensuring that promotions were finalized even while preparing for the minimum wage adjustments.
As the national December 1st deadline approached, Nasarawa State faced time constraints in finalizing its new minimum wage template. Nevertheless, initial discussions led Governor Sule to approve a new minimum wage of N70,500, consistent with the state’s financial realities. Implementation is already in progress, with only the consequential adjustments for upper-level officers remaining to be finalized—a matter that can be resolved through dialogue.
At this juncture, it is vital not to allow temporary disagreements to overshadow years of mutual trust and cooperation. The ongoing strike risks tarnishing Nasarawa State’s reputation and undermining the unique relationship between its government and labour. Such a loss would have long-term consequences for the state’s development and harmony.
Let us reason together. After One week of the Strike Action, We urge labour leaders to call off the strike and return to the negotiating table with Government representatives. This is not the time to escalate tensions but to demonstrate the strength of our relationship through dialogue and compromise. Let us preserve the goodwill and understanding that have been the hallmark of our partnership.
Together, we can resolve these challenges and continue building a better future for Nasarawa State. It is time to sheath our swords and work towards a resolution that benefits all.
