The United Nations Positive Livelihood Award Centre (UN-POLAC) has inducted Peter Ahemba, Senior Special Assistant on Public Affairs to Nasarawa State Governor Abdullahi Sule, as an Ambassador of Peace.
The induction ceremony, held over the weekend in Lagos, emphasized the importance of sustained efforts in peacebuilding.
Speaking at the event, UN-POLAC Director-General, Prof. Obong Halo Eton, highlighted that the recognition aligns with the organization's tradition of honoring individuals who embody the principles of peace and community service.
He noted that the inductees would undergo comprehensive training to equip them with the tools needed for conflict mediation, fostering dialogue, and building bridges of understanding within their communities.
In a virtual address, United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres encouraged the newly inducted Ambassadors of Peace to see their appointments as a call to serve humanity.
He stressed the importance of promoting human rights and the ideals of peaceful coexistence.
Governor Abdullahi Sule congratulated Peter Ahemba on his recognition and induction, describing it as a testament to Ahemba’s commitment to peace and dedication to his responsibilities.
In a personally signed letter, the governor praised Ahemba’s tenure as President of the Tiv Development Association (TIDA) in Nasarawa State, noting the significant progress achieved during that period.
"The UN-POLAC's description of you as someone devoted to strengthening the ideals of peace within and among nations is fitting," the governor wrote.
"Your recognition is well-deserved and will undoubtedly contribute to the advancement of UN-POLAC's mission and humanity at large."
As an inducted Peace Ambassador, Peter Ahemba is expected to collaborate with the UN-POLAC team on conflict resolution initiatives and activities that promote peace and positive living, both within and beyond Nigeria, in line with global best practices.
