The organized labor force in Nasarawa State has commenced preparations for an indefinite strike over the government's delay in implementing the new National Minimum Wage.
Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) Chairman in the state, Comrade Ismaila Okoh, disclosed during a phone conversation with journalists pointed out that despite several meetings with the government, chaired by Deputy Governor Dr. Emmanuel Akabe, no written agreement has been reached.
Comrade Okoh explained that while the government verbally proposed a ₦70,500 minimum wage, it has yet to formalize the offer in writing.
He added that all affiliate unions have been instructed to brace for industrial action should the government fail to meet the December 1, 2024, implementation deadline.
The NLC leader reaffirmed the workers' commitment to ensuring the full enforcement of the wage, which was enacted into law by President Bola Tinubu.
Responding to the situation, Deputy Governor Dr. Emmanuel Akabe assured that the state government would begin paying the ₦70,500 minimum wage from December 2024, noting that discussions on salary adjustments to accommodate the new wage structure are in advanced stages.
