In a bid to ensure lasting peace in Toto Local Government Area and address the protracted conflict between the Igbira and Bassa ethnic groups, Governor Abdullahi Sule has unveiled new measures at a stakeholders' meeting held at the Governor’s Lodge, Asokoro, Abuja.
The Governor disclosed that the new initiative, proposed by the Commanding Officer of the 177 Guards Battalion, Keffi, aims to expedite the return of displaced Bassa communities to their ancestral homes while fostering enduring harmony in the area.
Governor Sule highlighted ongoing efforts to implement recommendations from a committee led by the Emir of Lafia, HRH Justice Sidi Muhammad Bage (rtd). He explained that additional consultations and the incorporation of a fresh report from the 177 Guards Battalion are crucial for achieving a sustainable resolution.
“I apologize for the delay in implementing the committee’s recommendations. Achieving permanent peace requires thorough consultation and inclusivity to ensure decisions are acceptable to all parties,” Governor Sule emphasized.
Acknowledging the hardships faced by displaced Bassa communities living as IDPs, the Governor reiterated his administration's commitment to fast-tracking their resettlement while ensuring no resurgence of violence. He lauded security agencies, particularly the 177 Guards Battalion, for their proactive approach and detailed report on possible resettlement strategies.
During the meeting, Nasarawa State Commissioner of Police, Shehu Umar Nadada, outlined the deliberations, stating that a committee has been established to conduct broader consultations, with a two-week deadline to submit its findings.
HRH Mohammed Umar Azaki (Ohinoyi Ogye), the Ona of Toto, assured stakeholders of his support for the resettlement efforts, emphasizing the need for unity. Similarly, HRH Dr. David Tukura, the Aguma Bassa, commended the initiative, describing it as timely and inclusive. He urged all parties to embrace peace and forgiveness as the resettlement process unfolds.
The Bassa Resettlement Consultation Committee, composed of representatives from traditional institutions, security agencies, and political leaders in Toto Local Government Area, is expected to chart a comprehensive path toward achieving lasting peace and reintegration.
Governor Sule reaffirmed his administration’s dedication to an all-inclusive resolution, ensuring decisions reflect the collective aspirations of all stakeholders in Toto Local Government Area.
