Gombe State Government has commended the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) for the support in improving healthcare delivery services in the state.
Dr. Habu Dahiru State Commissioner of Health made the commendation at the launching of the 2024 Maternal Newborn Child Health (MNCH) Week, in Gombe
He expressed appreciation to the UNICEF Bauchi Field Office for the various interventions that have improved the well-being of women and children in the health and education sectors of Gombe state.
“He said on behalf of the Government and good people of Gombe State, I wish to express our profound appreciation to all development partners, especially UNICEF for the various supports in the health sector particularly in the areas of Reproductive Maternal and Child health,” he said.
“Gombe State Government is ever ready to support any intervention aimed at strengthening our health system, especially for the improvement of the lives and well-being of women and children.
“Indeed, the administration of Governor Inuwa Muhammad Yahaya placed high premium on the health sector by investing in infrastructure and equipment," This is because without health nothing works. This explains the numerous interventions in the health sector recorded by this Government of which you are all witnesses.
He highlighted the government’s efforts to upgrade primary and secondary healthcare facilities, ensuring quality services are accessible to all.
The Commissioner explained that the MNCH Week will provide an integrated package of health interventions, including routine immunization, Vitamin A supplementation, antenatal care, newborn care, and child spacing services.
Speaking, the Chief of Field, Bauchi UNICEF, Dr Nuzhat Rafique pledged continuous support to Gombe State Government in its efforts to promote healthy living among women and children.
She commended the state’s commitment to reducing maternal and child mortality rates through the various interventions supported by international partners working in the state.
Rafique stressed that the main focus of UNICEF is to ensure that women and children live healthy life which will in turn impact positively on the society.
The Chief of Field Office then reaffirmed its commitment to prioritising healthcare for vulnerable populations, particularly women and children.
On his part, The Mai Kaltungo, Saleh Muhammad commended the State Government for prioritizing the welfare and wellbeing of the citizens through its various programmes that have improved living conditions in the state.
The Traditional Ruler particularly commended the health initiatives of the administration with a focus on women and children which he said is the key to a healthy society.
The Mai Kaltungo assured that the traditional institutions of the State will continue to play a part in the mobilisation of the population to access the various health interventions in the state.
Partners like WHO and UNICEF have pledged support, commending the state’s commitment to reducing maternal and child mortality rates.
The program targets women of reproductive age and children under five across the state’s eleven Local Government Areas.
