In a remarkable act of philanthropy, former Super Eagles player Paul Okoku has provided brand-new school uniforms and writing materials to pupils of St. Paul’s Primary School, Costain, Lagos. The donation, facilitated through his Greater Tomorrow Children Foundation, took place on Tuesday at the school premises.
The event was graced by Tijani Tajudeen, Executive Secretary of the Lagos Mainland Education Authority Board, who presented the items to the excited pupils, accompanied by their delighted parents. Tajudeen lauded Okoku for his consistent support for the school, noting that the ex-international, an alumnus of St. Paul’s, has shown exemplary commitment to the welfare of its students.
“It is a source of immense joy to witness this donation by Paul Okoku. He has always been a champion for St. Paul’s Primary School, and today’s gesture is another testament to his humanitarian heart,” Tajudeen remarked.
Joining Tajudeen in presenting the items were former football stars Taiwo Oloyede, Edema Benson, and Wasiu Ipaye. They praised Okoku’s generosity, emphasizing its significance in a time of widespread economic challenges.
Ipaye highlighted, “Paul Okoku has demonstrated leadership and selflessness. My prayer is for God to uplift him in all his endeavors.” Benson echoed this sentiment, describing Okoku as “a gift to this generation,” whose efforts continue to inspire positive societal change.
The beneficiaries expressed their gratitude to Okoku and his foundation, noting that the new uniforms and supplies would ease their next term’s resumption.
Speaking from Atlanta, USA, Okoku reiterated the importance of supporting primary education as the bedrock of learning. He called for a united effort to address the challenges faced by primary schools, which he said are often overshadowed by secondary and tertiary institutions.
“Primary schools form the foundation of every success we’ve achieved. Supporting them is not just about financial aid; small acts of kindness can create a lasting impact,” Okoku stated. He urged public figures and individuals to contribute, emphasizing that even non-financial gestures could inspire and uplift young learners.
Okoku’s credentials underscore his passion for youth development. A former YSFON player and Gothia Cup champion, he was vice-captain of the Nigerian Flying Eagles at the 1983 U21 World Cup, an AFCON silver medalist in 1984, and a member of Nigeria’s 1984 Olympic Qualification Team.
Through his Greater Tomorrow Children Foundation, he continues to champion initiatives that improve the lives of children across Nigeria.
“Education is not a guarantee for success, but without it, you don’t stand a chance,” Okoku concluded, urging stakeholders to unite in building a better future through primary education.
