The Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Senator George Akume, has urged northern presidential aspirants to defer their ambitions until 2031, following the anticipated completion of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s second term in office.
Speaking during an interview on Politics on Sunday on Television Continental (TVC), hosted by Femi Akande, Akume emphasized the need for political stability and continuity.
“It would be unfair to disrupt the current political balance. President Tinubu, as a Southerner, deserves the opportunity for a second term,” Akume said. He further suggested that northern politicians,
including former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, should focus their aspirations on the 2031 presidential election cycle.
Akume reassured Nigerians of the government’s commitment to improving the nation’s economic landscape. Defending the ongoing tax reform bills, he explained that the measures were strategically designed to stabilize the economy and bring long-term benefits.
He highlighted the positive impact of President Tinubu’s economic policies, including the removal of fuel subsidies and the unification of the foreign exchange market, describing them as necessary steps to rebuild Nigeria after years of economic mismanagement.
“Reforms are challenging but necessary,” Akume remarked. “President Tinubu’s efforts are aimed at putting Nigeria back on the path of prosperity, and Nigerians will soon witness the results.”
The SGF also called on citizens to allow legislative processes to unfold, noting that the reform bills under consideration were crafted with the nation’s best interest at heart.
Akume stated that, if divinely ordained, northern aspirants like Atiku Abubakar could still achieve the presidency in the future, even at an advanced age.
However, he insisted that the 2027 presidential race should remain focused on the South.
