U.S. President-elect Donald Trump has pledged to impose high import tariffs on goods from Mexico, Canada, and China as part of his strategy to address issues related to drug trafficking and illegal immigration.
In a statement posted on Truth Social, the social media platform he co-founded, Trump announced plans to sign an executive order imposing a 25% tariff on all imports from Mexico and Canada on his first day in office. The measure, he emphasized, would remain in effect until both nations take significant steps to halt the flow of drugs, particularly fentanyl, and unauthorized migrants into the United States.
"On January 20th, as one of my many first Executive Orders, I will sign all necessary documents to charge Mexico and Canada a 25 per cent tariff on ALL products coming into the United States. Their inaction on this crisis has gone on for too long," Trump stated.
The president-elect argued that Mexico and Canada possess the "absolute right and power" to resolve these challenges swiftly and urged them to act.
Additionally, Trump revealed plans to introduce a 10% tariff on Chinese imports until the issue of drugs entering the U.S., particularly through Mexico, is adequately addressed.
“This invasion of our country must stop, and it's time for those responsible to face significant consequences,” he declared.
Trump’s announcement underscores his hardline stance on trade and border security as he prepares to assume office.
