The first indigenous private university in Nasarawa State, Phoenix University, has been commended for setting a new benchmark in education in Nigeria.
The accolades came during its inaugural matriculation, conferment of a doctorate degree honoris causa, and the investiture of its Chancellor, Dr. Muhammadu Indimi, held in Agwada, Nasarawa State.
Governor Abdullahi Sule of Nasarawa State explained the reasons behind his administration's decision to award scholarships to 92 indigenous students of Phoenix University.
He emphasized the importance of supporting the first indigenous private institution in the state to ensure its growth and contribution to classical education in the region and beyond.
"I come from a humble background and benefitted from scholarships during my academic journey in the United States.
It is, therefore, a personal commitment to ensure that others have access to education," Governor Sule said.
He also lauded the university's advanced infrastructure, including state-of-the-art laboratories and a thriving ICT department, which he described as crucial for academic excellence.
The governor urged students to take their studies seriously, stressing that the scholarship was a significant investment by the state government.
He also called for collaboration between Phoenix University and existing state and federal universities in Nasarawa.
Professor Ibrahim Gambari, a former Chief of Staff to President Muhammadu Buhari and a guest at the event, praised the university for its rapid development.
"Unlike many institutions that start small, Phoenix University has hit the ground running, with adequate facilities for staff, students, and academic activities," Gambari said.
He applauded Senator Abdullahi Adamu, the institution’s Visitor, for situating the university in a rural area to enhance social and educational development.
In his response, Dr. Muhammadu Indimi, after receiving a doctorate degree honoris causa, commended Senator Abdullahi Adamu's vision and pledged continued support for the university's growth.
Dr. Adamu likened the university’s progress to witnessing the birth of a first child, expressing pride in the institution's strides toward excellence.
The Vice-Chancellor, Professor Abdullahi Bala, emphasized the unique opportunities available to students, including a fit-for-purpose curriculum, entrepreneurial training, and professional certifications.
"Our students will graduate as global players, equipped with skills for the 21st-century economy," he stated, urging students to fully immerse themselves in learning.
The event underscored the transformative power of education and Phoenix University’s commitment to becoming a beacon of academic and technological advancement in Nigeria.
