The Organized Labour in Nasarawa State, comprising the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), Trade Union Congress (TUC), and the Joint Public Service Negotiating Council (JPNC), has issued a directive for an indefinite strike action to commence at midnight on Saturday, November 30, 2024.
This decision follows the failure of the Nasarawa State Government to act on the recommendations of the Minimum Wage Negotiating Committee. The committee, chaired by the Deputy Governor, Dr. Emmanuel A. Akabe, was inaugurated on November 11, 2024, to develop an implementation template for the National Minimum Wage in the state.
Despite the submission of a sub-technical committee's report, the government has been accused of showing a lackadaisical attitude toward addressing the matter. Organized Labour expressed frustration over the state's inability to reconvene negotiations, describing previous efforts as abortive.
In a joint State Executive Council meeting held on Thursday, November 28, 2024, the NLC, TUC, and JPNC resolved to align with national directives to enforce the N70,000 minimum wage. Workers in the state are now directed to proceed with the strike until further notice.
"Aluta Continua, Victoria Asserta!" the bulletin concluded, urging workers to remain steadfast in their collective struggle.
