The Kaduna State Council of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has criticized the Kaduna State Government for failing to implement the N72,000 minimum wage as previously announced by Governor Uba Sani.
In a statement titled “National Minimum Wage in Kaduna State: A Charade Taken Too Far” and signed by the council's Secretary, Comrade Gado Hussaini Titus, the NLC expressed disappointment with what it described as "an arbitrary and insulting increment for workers" instead of the promised adjustments. The council warned of a potential strike action if the government fails to honor its commitment.
The statement, dated 28th November 2024, emphasized that the government’s failure to adopt the negotiated consequential adjustments in the November salary represents a betrayal of public trust.
“The Kaduna State Council of the NLC views this paltry increment as an affront to the dignity of labour. It is unacceptable for a government to make lofty public promises only to renege on its commitments through half-hearted measures that fail to meet even the most basic needs of workers,” the statement read.
The NLC demanded the immediate implementation of the agreed adjustments, alongside the signing of a memorandum of understanding. Failure to comply, the council warned, would be viewed as a betrayal of Kaduna State’s workforce.
During its meeting on Tuesday, 27th November 2024, the State Executive Council (SEC) reaffirmed its commitment to the directive of the National Executive Council, which mandates a strike action against any state government that fails to fully implement the minimum wage by 30th November 2024.
“For us, Sunday, 1st December 2024, is sacrosanct, especially in light of this obvious charade,” the NLC declared.
Efforts to reach Ibrahim Musa, media aide to Governor Sani, for comments were unsuccessful at the time of filing this report.
