President Bola Tinubu has expressed serious concern over the rising violence in Rivers State following last Saturday’s local government council elections. In a press release from the State House, the President condemned reports of arson and explosions in the state, urging Governor Siminalayi Fubara, political leaders, and their supporters to remain calm and respect the rule of law.
President Tinubu called on all political actors to de-escalate tensions and discourage any form of violence or destruction. He has instructed the Nigerian police to swiftly restore peace and ensure the security of local government offices and other public institutions.
Emphasizing the importance of safeguarding government properties built with public funds, President Tinubu reiterated that "self-help" has no place in a democratic system, especially as Nigeria marks 25 years of continuous democracy. He further reminded the public that any political disputes arising from the election should be resolved through the judiciary, not through violence or unrest.
The directive comes as law enforcement agencies are tasked with bringing the situation under control and maintaining law and order in the state.
