The All Progressives Congress (APC) in Nasarawa State has endorsed a consensus approach for selecting candidates in the upcoming Local Government Elections, scheduled for November 2, 2024. The decision was made during an expanded stakeholders meeting convened by Governor Abdullahi Sule at the Government House in Lafia.
In attendance were prominent figures including former APC National Chairman, Senator Abdullahi Adamu, Senator Umaru Tanko Almakura, and Nasarawa State Speaker, Rt. Hon. Danladi Jatau. The consensus strategy, according to the party, is aimed at fostering unity and ensuring success in the local government polls.
Governor Sule commended the stakeholders for their commitment to the party’s success and reiterated his dedication to ensuring a smooth transition of leadership within the APC. He emphasized the importance of internal democracy, stating that candidates would be chosen based on prudence, experience, and competence.
The Speaker of the Nasarawa State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Jatau, urged party members to prioritize party unity over personal interests, highlighting the significance of the November elections. Senator Adamu and Senator Almakura echoed similar sentiments, stressing that the consensus candidates must be credible and capable of ensuring APC's long-term success.
The meeting also addressed inclusivity, with female aspirants and persons with disabilities being offered a 50% discount on nomination fees. Party leaders underscored the need for all candidates to purchase the required nomination forms as part of the consensus process.
Key stakeholders including the Minister of State for Police Affairs, Imaan Suleiman Ibrahim, and APC’s National Legal Adviser, Professor Abdulkarim Kana, contributed to the discussions, reaffirming the party’s resolve to strengthen its position ahead of future elections.
