An alleged attempt by rogue policemen, led by the Deputy Commissioner of Police (Operations), to seize sensitive electoral materials from the Rivers State Independent Electoral Commission (RSIEC) was thwarted by Governor Siminalayi Fubara.
The incident took place just a day before the scheduled local government elections in Rivers State.
The policemen reportedly attempted to break into the RSIEC gate and strong room to cart away the materials meant for the polls. It was revealed that the deployment of the officers was directed by the Inspector-General of Police.
Vigilant security officials at the Commission promptly alerted key government figures and the RSIEC leadership, who then informed Governor Fubara.
The Governor swiftly led a team of high-ranking government officials, including lawmakers from both the National and State Assemblies, and political stakeholders, to the scene.
Speaking to the press outside the RSIEC office on Aba Road in Port Harcourt, Governor Fubara condemned the illegal actions of the officers involved.
He criticized the Inspector-General of Police for meddling in the state's affairs, stating that the local government election is an internal matter that should not be subject to external interference.
Governor Fubara also expressed his objection to the sudden withdrawal of security personnel assigned to protect the RSIEC office, only to be replaced by officers from a neighboring state. He urged the IGP to respect the autonomy of state affairs.
As of now, key state officials, including the Chief of Staff, the Speaker of the Rivers State House of Assembly, and other stakeholders, are standing guard at the RSIEC office to prevent further disruptions, ensuring that the election proceeds as scheduled.
