Rivers State Governor, Sir Siminalayi Fubara, has declared Thursday, October 3, and Friday, October 4, 2024, as public holidays to allow residents to return to their communities and participate in the forthcoming Local Government elections on Saturday, October 5.

In addition, Governor Fubara has imposed a strict restriction on vehicular movement from midnight on Friday, October 4, until 5 p.m. on Election Day, October 5, 2024.

In a statewide broadcast from the Government House in Port Harcourt on Wednesday, Governor Fubara emphasized the importance of the elections in ensuring democratic governance in the 23 Local Government Councils of Rivers State.

He recounted the legal directives, including a Supreme Court judgment and a Rivers State High Court ruling, mandating the conduct of the elections and forbidding the administration of councils by unelected officers.

Governor Fubara assured residents that all necessary preparations, including security measures and logistical support, are in place to ensure free, fair, and credible elections.

He urged all registered voters to turn out and exercise their civic duty, while warning that any breach of the movement restrictions would be met with strict enforcement by security agencies.
