It is indeed an honour to join Nigerian citizens and leaders across the globe to pay my respect and felicilate with our former Head of State and elder-statesman who was on the saddle from 1966-1975, the iconic General Yakubu Gowon GCFR, on his 90th birthday.
General Gowon's untiring service and exemplary leadership has defied old age.
He continues to deploy his time, attention and personal resources to the progress and unity of Nigeria. Instances include the 'Nigeria Prays' intercession platform which he initiated touring all states of the Federation praying for the nation. He has remain dedicated and involved in the Council of State meetings and gracing key national and public events with his iconic presence.
Among his numerous legacies is sustaining the oneness of Nigeria on the successful prosecution of the civil war from 1967-1970, otherwise, Nigeria would have disintegrated. He restructured the then four regions by creating 12 states. He established the NYSC scheme as a enduring unifying platform in Nigeria. These and many more are legacies that will continue to speak to his credit.
Attaining the nonagenarian age of 90 calls for celebration and thanksgiving to God for the person of General Gowon who has become a model of modesty, integrity, piety, patriotism and selfless service to nation and humanity.
Happy 90th birthday! GCFR.
