The Chief of Army Staff, Lt. Gen. Taoreed Lagbaja, has passed away following a battle with stage three cancer. According to a senior government official, Lagbaja died nearly 48 hours ago in an undisclosed hospital overseas.
The news of his death had been withheld due to intense lobbying among military generals vying to fill the position.
Lagbaja, born on February 28, 1968, in Ilobu, Osun State, was appointed as the 27th Chief of Army Staff by President Bola Tinubu in June 2023. His death marks the end of a distinguished military career and leaves a significant gap in Nigeria's military leadership.
