The Action Peoples Party (APP) has achieved a significant victory in the just-concluded local government election in Rivers State, securing 22 out of 23 chairmanship seats. The results were announced by the Chief Election Officer of the Rivers State Independent Electoral Commission (RSIEC), Justice Adolphus Enebeli, in Port Harcourt on Saturday.
Justice Enebeli stated that the announcement of results for Etche Local Government Area is temporarily suspended, as the collation of votes is still ongoing. The final results for Etche, along with those of the 319 councillorship seats, will be declared at a later date.
Earlier in the day, Aaron Chukwuemeka, Chairman of the Rivers State People's Democratic Party (PDP), cautioned that prematurely announcing election results could incite violence. He emphasized the need to respect court judgments, stating, "We cannot support or promote lawlessness or impunity, even though we are the ruling party in Rivers State. The proper court judgments must be obeyed."
With this decisive win, Governor Siminalayi Fubara has regained significant political control in Rivers State.
