Corporate Accountability and Public Participation Africa (CAPPA) and nine other rights organizations across Africa are urging the Ghanaian Government to immediately stop the poisoning of water bodies, lands, and human health by illegal miners.
In a joint statement issued by the Our Water Our Right Africa Coalition (OWORAC), the organizations stand with Ghanaians who are protesting the harmful effects of illegal mining, known as galamsey, on water sources and livelihoods.
They stress that access to clean drinking water is a basic human right that must be protected.
The activists warn that the failure to address this issue is causing significant harm to public health and the economy of communities near affected water bodies.
They called on the Ghanaian Government to take action to remediate the contaminated waters and enforce regulations to ensure sustainable mining practices.
The statement was signed by various organizations from Ghana, Nigeria, Cameroon, Gabon, Kenya, Senegal, and the African region as a whole.
They emphasized the need for immediate action to protect the health and well-being of all Ghanaians affected by water pollution caused by illegal mining activities.
