On Friday, the Movement for National Reform (MNR) publicly criticized Dr. Akin Fapohunda's recent draft bill aimed at restructuring Nigeria's government.
The MNR accused Fapohunda of attempting to convert an annexure of Decree 24 of 1999 into the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria (CFRN), describing this move as both "curious and worrisome."
The group advocated for reinstating and amending the suspended 1963 CFRN to reflect contemporary realities, thereby promoting true democracy and republicanism.
They argued that this approach, unlike Fapohunda’s, would benefit all Nigerians without succumbing to clannish sentiments.
The MNR emphasized the importance of restoring the 1963 CFRN, as opposed to the 1999 CFRN, to ensure a more democratic foundation for Nigeria.
They cautioned that Fapohunda’s efforts could destabilize the nation and urged a more careful and inclusive approach to constitutional reform.
The statement was signed by Prof. O. Igho Natufe and Dr. Yemi Adegoke, among other prominent members from various geopolitical zones.
