Mrs. Olubunmi Otti Urges Benue Secondary Students to Form Young Consumer Clubs to Protect Their Rights

Mrs Olubunmi Otti has encouraged secondary school students in Benue to form Young Consumer Clubs so as to be educating themselves on their rights as consumers to enable them take action when their rights might be trampled upon. 

Otti who is the Chief Consumer and Business Education Officer, Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (FCCPC) gave the encouragement on Wednesday during separate sensitization visits to the New Covenant Christian College, Government Model Secondary School, Christ Anglican College and Mount Carmel Girls College all in Makurdi.

She reiterated that if they form young consumer clubs, it would afford them the opportunity to acquaint themselves with all their rights as well as responsibilities and they would be able to take action in any situation where they might be shortchanged.

She informed them that the commission do organize National Young Consumer Competition every year for schools, stating that they would be tested and if they pass they would be invited to be part of the 2024 competition. 

She said that the commission had put modalities and measures in place to adequately protect the consumers and ensure fairness in the market.

She pointed out that the aim of the commission was to ensure that the consumers were not shortchanged when they buy goods and services, stressing that the major aim of establishing the commission was to safeguard consumers interest. 

She further said that the role of the commission was to identify businesses that shortchanged consumers and take drastic actions against them.

Also, the Consumer Education Officer, FCCPC, Ms Rejoice Yawas, said that the commission want them to know their rights and responsibilities hence the sensitization exercise.

Yawas said that consumers had the right to information which means before buying a product they must be informed about the uses of the product or service.
