The Nasarawa State Government has announced a ban on all ethnic vigilante groups operating within the state. This decision came after an emergency security meeting convened by Governor Abdullahi Sule on Monday.
Governor Sule, citing powers vested in him through Section 97A of the Penal Code and other relevant laws, banned specific ethnic vigilante groups including the Fulani group known as Kungiyar Zaman Lafiya, Bassa Vigilante group, and the Eggon Vigilante Group.
An Executive Order No. 1 of 2024 was issued on Tuesday, extending the ban to any association, movement, organization, or society operating under the guise of ethnic vigilante.
The order states that any group aiming to provide security among particular ethnic groups using force or arms is considered unlawful.
Affected groups have been directed to hand over their uniforms and weapons to the Commissioner of Police in Nasarawa State within two weeks from the issuance of the order.
The state government emphasized that these banned groups are detrimental to good governance and are declared unlawful societies in the state.
