Governor Abdullahi Sule of Nasarawa State has called an emergency security council meeting to address the escalating cases of kidnappings across various parts of the state. The meeting, held at the Government House on Monday, aims to tackle the emerging security threats facing the state.
Expressing his concern over the increasing security challenges, Governor Sule highlighted the surge in kidnappings in areas including Keffi, Doma, Lafia, Awe, Obi, Keana, Karu, and Nasarawa Local Government Areas. Additionally, he raised concerns about the activities of the Bassa militia group, particularly in areas surrounding Shegye, Katakpa, and other villages in Toto Local Government Area.
Governor Sule revealed that discussions during the meeting would also focus on the potential banning of single ethnic group vigilante groups operating in the state.
He emphasized that any ethnic group establishing a vigilante group would face a ban, including the Fulani Vigilante Group that has been active since 2009. Members of these groups would be given a grace period to join existing community vigilante groups.
Furthermore, the Governor acknowledged the efforts of his Deputy, Dr. Emmanuel Akabe, and appreciated the support of traditional rulers and security agencies during his absence.
He commended the security agencies for their hard work in mitigating security challenges.
The meeting also aims to address recent conflicts between farmers and herders, particularly between the Eggon and Tiv communities in Kadarko, where five people were killed.
Discussions will focus on finding solutions to these ongoing issues and ensuring peace and security in the state.
