The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has issued a statement demanding the immediate resignation of Senate President, Senator Godswill Akpabio, amidst allegations of budget padding and financial misconduct.
The statement signed by Hon. Debo Ologunagba, party National Publicity Secretary, e-copy made available to newsmen.
The PDP asserts that Senator Akpabio should step aside to allow for an independent investigation into claims that a staggering N3.7 trillion was discreetly inserted into the 2024 budget for purported non-existent projects. Additionally, the Party calls for Akpabio's prompt appearance before the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) to address allegations of misappropriating N108 billion earmarked for Akwa Ibom State during his tenure as Governor.
Moreover, the PDP condemns the suspension of Senator Abdul Ningi by the All Progressives Congress (APC) leadership in the Senate, viewing it as an attempt to stifle investigation into budget padding allegations he raised.
The Party highlights concerns over the reported N86 billion contract scam in the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC) during Akpabio's tenure as Minister of Niger Delta Affairs.
The PDP criticizes the APC Senate leadership for allegedly obstructing transparency and accountability, urging them to subject the matter to an open investigation in line with Senate rules.
The Party emphasizes the importance of restoring public trust in the Senate and calls on Akpabio to recuse himself from the investigation to prevent further tarnishing of the institution's image.
In conclusion, the PDP reiterates its support for Senator Ningi's efforts to promote probity and accountability in governance and calls for Akpabio's cooperation with investigations to clear his name.
