The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has declared Hon. Musa Ibrahim Ekye of the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) as the winner of the Nasarawa State House of Assembly re-run election held at Bassa 1 polling unit.
Declaring the election result, INEC returning officer Professor Abubakar Sadiq Aliyu from Federal University Lafia said the election was contested to the conclusion. He announced that combining the results of the March 18, 2023, election and the re-run of February 3, 2024, in Doma South State House of Assembly Constituency, it showed that Hon. Musa Ibrahim Abubakar of NNPP scored a total of 4,776 votes to defeat Hon. John Osewu of the All Progressives Congress (APC) who scored 3,931 votes.
Professor Abubakar further explained that Musa Ibrahim Abubakar of NNPP, having satisfied the requirements by law, is hereby declared the winner and returned elected. Our correspondent, who monitored the election, reports that the exercise was conducted in a rancor-free atmosphere.
In his remarks after INEC declared him the winner of the election, Hon. Musa Ibrahim Abubakar commended the electorate, electoral college, and security apparatus for ensuring the smooth conduct of the election. Hon. Musa Ibrahim Abubakar dedicated his victory to Allah and thanked his constituents for affirming their mandate given to him in the March 18, 2023, election.
"This will spur me to continue with constituency projects for my people, which previously they lacked such development and dividends of democracy."
On his part, Doma Local Government Council Chairman Hon. Ahmed Usman Sarki has showered encomium on the people of Unguwar Sarki Bassa one for their sense of maturity exhibited before and after the election. "Even though my political party lost the election, that is not the end of it all; we will prepare ahead of the next election."
Hon. Sarki congratulated the winner of the re-run election and called on him to embrace all people of his Doma South Constituency irrespective of political party lines.
While inspecting the election process, the state Commissioner of Police Usman Nadada and Resident Electoral Commissioner Alhaji Shehu El-Wahab expressed satisfaction with the turnout, peaceful conduct of the electorate, and above all, the security mechanisms put in place to maintain order.
It is noted that the appeal court directed INEC to conduct a re-run at Unguwar Sarki Bassa one based on the petition before it by Hon. John Osewu of APC challenging the declaration of Hon. Musa Ibrahim Abubakar as the winner of Doma South State Assembly.
Our correspondent hinted that the large turnout was impressive and led to jubilations across the constituency. He also stated that in the result of the re-run election, Hon. Musa Ibrahim Abubakar of NNPP defeated Hon. John Osewu with 122 votes, while the APC candidate got only 5 votes.
