The National Directorate of Employment (NDE) has launched a groundbreaking initiative under its Renewed Hope Employment Initiative (RHEI) to address Nigeria’s unemployment crisis. The program aims to empower 93,731 unskilled and unemployed individuals across the country, including 3,000 persons with special needs.
Speaking during the official flag-off at the NDE Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Skills Acquisition Center in Kuduru, Bwari Area Council, Abuja, the Director General of NDE, Silas Agara, emphasized the critical role of digital literacy and entrepreneurship in tackling unemployment. Agara announced that approximately 4,000 Nigerians would undergo training in Information Communication Technology (ICT) and digital skills as part of the initiative.
The program spans all 36 states and the FCT, engaging participants in three-month training sessions in various entrepreneurship and vocational skills. Beneficiaries will receive tools, equipment, and startup capital to transition into productive ventures. Agara assured that discussions with credit institutions are ongoing to provide comprehensive support for participants.
“Inclusivity is central to this program,” Agara stated, adding that a minimum of 10 individuals from each of Nigeria’s 8,809 electoral wards would benefit from training in 30 skill sets across four core programs: vocational skills development, small-scale enterprises, rural employment promotion, and special public works.
Agara highlighted the NDE's adoption of cutting-edge technology in designing and executing the initiative, ensuring a sustainable employment framework. He also revealed plans for a robust mentorship program where experienced business leaders will guide participants through their entrepreneurial journeys, providing insights and support to overcome challenges.
To track the program's impact, the NDE will monitor participants post-training, using their feedback to refine future initiatives.
This strategy underscores the NDE’s commitment to fostering a resilient workforce that can drive economic growth across Nigeria.
Through the RHEI, the NDE is not only addressing immediate employment needs but also laying the foundation for a sustainable and inclusive approach to workforce development.
